I feel you. I’m the “relay guy” at work and we are trying to emulate all the functions of safety critical relays in a microprocessor based platform. The team is perpetually surprised about what you can accomplish with just the right number of turns of a specific gauge wire.

Also consider wet erase markers if you don’t do a lot of erasing on the spot, and you want to avoid the sticky dry erase “dust”

Yup, a clean warm moist compress applied 3-4 times a day for 10 mins can help bring it to a head and drain naturally. See a doctor if it doesn’t get better, antibiotics might be required.

Wonder if you could have an auger that moves the balls in and out of the tube. I’d worry about jams, but that’s just my lack of experience with materials handling.

There is something in me that wants a laser diode to fire down the back side of the casing hitting a stationary mirror at the bottom which directs the beam to a mirror in the front on a galvanometer, the galvo aims the beam up and down the scale.

Just a couple thoughts:
A spool of red plastic filament in a clear tube, the motor spools out/reels in the filament to adjust the height.
A belt on two pulleys, one at the top and bottom. The outside of the belt is painted partly red the other white.
