Over the last few years we've seen an increase in #autonomy in weapons systems and the integration of #AI in warfare, surveillance, policing and border control.

We need new int’l law to protect humanity from automated harm. Support us to make this a reality:

@peterstefanovic.bsky.social UK-based privacy advocacy group ‘Big Brother Watch’ is currently campaigning against mass bank surveillance, workplace monitoring, and facial recognition technology. I wondered if you had any thoughts on the bills in parliament regarding surveillance and overreach. /1

People are concerned that the UK wants to spy on the USA but they seem to have forgotten that the USA politely asked them to.

I wrote a thread in reply to an article about it. bsky.app/profile/summ...
The partnership between GCHQ (Government Communications Headquarters) and the NSA (National Security Agency) is one of the closest intelligence-sharing relationships in the world. They are allies. They share this information and the truth is the proposed Online Safety Bill is causing confusion. /1

If you’re interested in mass surveillance/big data/human rights/technology the below Bluesky thread is worth a read.
Look, I'm very annoyed right now but I came back to be pretentious and coin a term that I think needs to be considered in our current context: data immiseration.

A lot of thinkers have touched on this, but I'm not aware of anything that actually sets this out specifically.

Attorney Jack Waldron is representing Chris Gatlin in a lawsuit about the misuse of facial recognition technology by law enforcement. Gatlin was wrongfully incarcerated for 17 months after an AI facial recognition program misidentified him as a suspect in an assault case on St. Louis’ Metrolink. /1

The USA has had a mass surveillance system for decades, I just think it will be upgraded significantly and it will be easier to interrogate data than it ever has been before using reasoning model LLMs. My primary concern is actually changes in legislation regarding privacy rights.

@caseynewton.bsky.social wrote about Google unveiling its 'responsible AI progress report' by quietly deleting the part of its AI principles where it promised not to work on weapons.

Why is that a surprise? Because of Project Maven.

In my last thread I talked about when surveillance captures crime, but no-one acts. In this thread I’m going to explain what Palantir is.

So, what is Palantir? You’ve probably heard the name—maybe in the context of government surveillance, police databases, or big data analytics. (🧵 1/7)

We live in a world where surveillance cameras are everywhere. Also: AI can analyze footage faster than ever. Intelligence agencies like the NSA & GCHQ collect massive amounts of data.

And yet—countless crimes caught on camera go unreported and unsolved. Why? (🧵 1/8)
