Predictions of changes in total soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks in mineral soil (thick lines, coefficients and p values from Figure 4c) and peat soil (thin lines, coefficients and p-values from Figure 4b) along the chronosequence, at sites with low (orange lines) or high (solid blue lines) topographic wetness index (TWI). Total SOC was calculated at: (a) fixed depth of 60 cm, (b) fixed soil mass of 200 kg m−2, and (c) fixed ash mass of 200 kg m−2. Low and high TWI correspond to the first and third quartile of all the TWI values (5.23 and 11.73, respectively). Dotted, dashed and solid lines respectively indicate that the TSC effect was not significant (p > 0.1), marginally significant (0.05 < p < 0.1), or significant (p < 0.05).

Soil organic carbon theoretical evolutions under business-as-usual (BAU) practices as compared to the adoption of sustainable soil management (SSM) practices. The x-axes represent time, expressed in years. The y-axes represent SOC stock, expressed as Mg C ha−1. ΔSOC represents the variation in SOC stock content of a land unit induced by SSM after 20 years with respect to the baseline SOC stock content (according to the stock difference method) or the difference in SOC stock content at one point in time (year 20) between a treatment plot where SSM is applied and a control plot (according to the paired comparison method). Every graph represents a different scenario: (a) lands where SOC levels have reached equilibrium and it is possible to increase levels through SSM; (b) lands where SOC is increasing but can be further increased through SSM; (c) lands where SOC is decreasing and it is possible to stop or mitigate losses in SOC levels; or (d) even reverse such fall through SSM.
