Beyond the simple "lowest common denominator" explanation.

Rian Johnson also seems like a good director to involve in this because he'd actually be interested in developing movies that are artistically satisfying but still legible to distracted audiences

I've seen people complain about this approach but imo the difference is that Netflix has more precise data and analytics than what we had before, and it goes a long way to explaining the gap between critically acclaimed shows (active viewing) and popular shows (passive viewing)...

For example, having the first part narrated by the main character via a letter where he literally tells the viewers what the important details are and what is happening on the screen. It's so viewers don't lose the plot when they're scrolling on their phone while the movie plays

It is for sure. This isn't something I came up with on my own it's a deliberate creative choice by Netflix to address the issue that most people who "watch Netflix" don't actually watch Netflix

Imo the big problem here is DMW is a "netflix movie" that is specifically designed for "second screen viewing" aka "not watching the movie"
It's probably the best second screen movie made so far, but a lot problems come from that design goal.

I got the impression that being a asshole was the point of that exercise, because the purpose was to shit-test/manipulate the Priest into revealing both his character and his religiosity, not to have a conversation

Considering you'd spend most of your time in a small, enclosed space, probably more of an asset than a liability compared to someone who needs to go outside occasionally (outside is the endless void of space)

Nice! A few other things that help:
Glue a cork to the base to act as a grip
If the table isn't a good height, put a box or a block of wood on it to rest your wrists
Keep the brush hand in the same position, move the figure, not the brush
I'm sure you know all this but someone might find it helpful

The first time i scrolled past this i wasn't really looking at it and thought it was a picture of a maltese or something.

I thought, "oh wow this would be a good detail to include in a body horror story"
I'm only slightly horrified by it myself, but maybe other people would be suitably horrified to experience this and it works be a good detail for that kind of story.

It's like having the lingering flavor of vomit caught in my mouth and throat except its not in my mouth, it's in my stomach where it's supposed to be.
And I swear I'm not mentioning it to complain, I'm mentioning it because as soon as i realized what was going on
