I suspect for the next year or so I’ll keep occasionally going “man, I can’t wait for when DA4 eventually comes out” only to realize it did and I played it and it was amazing and I’m actually waiting for DA5 now.

Playing Inquisition first will introduce you to the world and lore and give you better context for the events of Veilguard, but it’s not as necessary as direct sequels in a book series.

but it follows mostly different characters in different parts of the world. Veilguard also doesn’t take into account most player decisions from previous games, which is disappointing to long-time fans but easier for new players.

I’d say it’s not 100% required, but I would highly recommend playing Inquisition first. It’s a complex world with a ton of lore and reappearing characters (though they usually reappear in minor roles). Veilguard is a sequel to some major events in Inquisition…

If you can stand to skip the side stuff, do it. The side stuff sometimes has interesting lore, but mostly not anything super important. Just focus on the main story and character quests if you can, and do the Descent and Trespasser DLCs. Both (Trespasser especially) are very relevant to Veilguard.
