I always dislike how kitchens are in the same room as the rest of the apartment without any wall-like dividers. Also knowing that this apartment is going to be like $2000/month...

That can happen. A nail fungus can grow underneath that causes it to fall off. Had this happen to my big toe a long time ago.

If you want a historical/literary site, Sengaku-ji is the temple where the graves of the 47 ronin is located. If you're wanting other temples/shrines, Meiji shrine is cool and Ueno Park has many shrines and temples in the area. Also, near Meiji Shrine there is a neat traditional art museum.
