Fortunately, I found supplements that allow me to still chug milk and enjoy my cheese plates! It's all very biopunk.

The bottles can be pricey in the US, to the point where it's actually cheaper to import them from the UK, where they cost a fraction of the money AND work better ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

And that is the story of how I saw like three doctors and spent most of my money because I thought I might have some extremely serious and elusively rare medical problem, only to find out I had a fairly common food intolerance. Still not sure how the doctors didn't hit on that idea earlier than me.

Upon adult reflection, of course the signs and symptoms had been there my whole life. Even my mother revealed that as a newborn I couldn't have dairy-based products and I only found out that year that it's actually super common for indigenous folks to not tolerate dairy that well. 4/5

I ended up doing the research myself (which I avoided because I tend to catastrophize medical problems) and one article I read had me wondering if I was, in fact, lactose intolerant! It had never really occurred to me as a possibility. I'd been drinking milk and eating cheese my whole life. 3/5

The longer I just tried to tank it, the more worried I became that something very serious was happening. Eventually I folded and saw a few specialists. All testing came back clear, blood work came back totally clean, I was told "well you're not sick" but that obviously didn't fix the issues. 2/5

So all throughout college I had some brand new and extreme stomach and gastro issues that left me in agony when "flare ups" would happen. I'm in the US, seeing any specialist doctors was very much out of my student budget and so I tried to change a few of my newer eating habits to cope. 1/5
