What’s happening now is wrong. This attention slavery. Nostalgia isn’t the answer. The 90s will not save you. Y2K is over. We are sick and haunted. Looking back will only lead us to this same place. The phone is never going to wake you up. Nothing meaningful is happening when it’s fed to you by an algorithm. We’re cooperating in being molded into simple, neat, data friendly simulations of voiceless profiles to be sold products whose marketing intends to make us feel that our purchases and media preferences and behaviors are expressions of an untenable and impossible sense of belonging and simultaneous distinct individuality. The capitalist phenomena of marketing has reached its’ logical end. There is no more optimal strategy for exploitation than cognitive dissonance. The sinister irony that the best way for me to communicate this is through the very social media platforms I’m condemning isn’t lost on me. It’s proof of how confident they are in the product and how powerless they think we are to reject it. They would love for this idea to resonate if it meant your eyes stayed fixed on the screen. As long as something else appears in the next moment and you stay here. Every second they’ve got you is a second of premature death. I won’t tell you what to do.
