Ffffreeeezing, but we do get the rainbows!
Almost summer in southern Lutruwita. In the foreground wet, windswept lighter green and burgundy fruit trees shiver in the wind, and on the left a white gum, shaped by years of this sort of thing, leans precariously north-eastwards. The land is lit up by the low evening sun, against billowing grey clouds and the perfect arc of a rainbow across the hills behind.

First peony for the season in my garden. Coral Charm.
A 'Coral Charm' peony flower, just opened. The bright coral-pink flower contrasts with a background of burgundy Japanese maple, set off by the green peony leaves below and some random ribbons of rough grass from the ever-encroaching paddock next door.

I am laid low atm with the most flamboyantly sneezy, stuffy, achy and coughy of colds. But I have two warm sausage dogs and Susie Dent's delightful Guilty by Definition for company. Things could be worse!

Beautiful autumn election day in Tassie, handing out how-to-vote cards with my two democracy sausages. Everyone's friendly, cheerful, happy to be here, and the sausage sizzle's doing good business raising money for a local charity. The Labor volunteer just offered me a jelly bean.

Gentle, all-day, healing rain. So good.

Our garden pond brings frogs, birds and lizards. It doesn't need a pump or filter; the fish and plants just do their thing. Late winter it gets a bit green and I scoop out some algae and duckweed, but then it clears again.

As campaigning ramps up ahead of the announcement of the date for the 2025 federal election, shadow attorney-general Michaelia Cash has directly linked Opposition leader Peter Dutton to President Donald Trump. Answering a question on Nine's Today this morning, Cash said Trump was showing that "he's a man of action". "The American people, they expect action. And that is what they're getting. And they'll get the exact same attitude under a Peter Dutton argument," Cash said.

Just read a manuscript with a character smirking three times on one page. What is it with all the smirking, people? Why is 'smirk' having a moment? Is it all Scott Morrison?

Then it begins to shoot dramatically upwards, and by 2020, people are smirking all over the place. Is this all Scott Morrison's doing, or are there other factors at play?

Oh, that makes me so happy that your weeds are out of control too! (sorry). I didn't weed today because it was raining; still wuthering skies here in southern lutruwita Tas.

I like the way when peonies open you say 'wow, speccy flower', and then you come back a week later and they're twice the size, a bit plump, a bit loose, sprawled out over the garden as if they're kicking back with their friends, swapping yarns about the full lives they've had.

Oooh! Oooh! I have discovered that peonies love my garden *and* the possums don't eat them. Here's Queen Victoria getting her groove on.
