FADE IN: A DROP OF BLOOD, hanging, poised... It falls, splashes into a crimson circle, becomes... THE SUN, sinking behind the Chicago skyline. EXT. CHICAGO CITY STREETS - DAY A late spring afternoon is drawing towards evening. The streets are choked with traffic. Horns blare in frustration. INT. CAR - DAY VINCENT CASTELLANO drums his fingers impatiently on the steering wheel. Mid-30s. Casually dressed. Attractive in a way that has less to do with looks, more to do with sheer physical presence. And, when he chooses, a certain twinkly charm. Vincent glances across at his friend JOE SULLIVAN (mid-30s) in the passenger seat. Joe has a bloodstained makeshift bandage around his hand and an agitated look in his eyes. VINCENT You okay? JOE She’ll kill me if I’m not there. The wail of a siren. Vincent checks the rear view mirror, sees an emergency ambulance weaving through the traffic. VINCENT Hold on. He pulls the car over to let the ambulance pass - - and then pulls sharply back out, into the space created in its wake. Horns protest. Joe waves his hand in apology. Vincent hangs on the tail of the ambulance as it carves its way down the street. EXT. HOSPITAL EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT - DAY The ambulance pulls up. The doors fly open. The AMBULANCE CREW unload a gurney as DR. BETH TYLER (30) comes out to assist.

FADE IN: EXT. MANOR HOUSE - DAY Chickens scratch and peck at the well-trodden ground. SUPER: England, August 1100 AD At one of the manor house’s stone-framed windows, the face of 14-year-old ISOLDA. Wistfully watching the chickens as they roam free out here in the late summer sunshine. The chickens abruptly scatter as a messenger rides into the courtyard. His tunic has a distinctive fruit tree design. He hands a parchment letter to a guard. Isolda’s face lights up. She turns away from the window. EXT. MANOR HOUSE - DAY (MOMENTS LATER) Isolda emerges from the main entrance and scurries down the wooden stairs to the large courtyard. None of the servants busily stocking firewood and bales of hay in the building’s undercroft pay her any attention. Isolda continues on her way, past the kitchens and chapel. As she rounds the corner, she encounters a pack of hunting dogs - large, powerful mastiffs straining at their leashes. Isolda shrinks back as they surge towards her. The huntsmen pull the dogs away. She gives them a wide berth -- -- and careers straight into the path of PHILIPPE (early 20s), a swaggering young knight. PHILIPPE Looking for me, little mouse? He laughs at Isolda’s discomfort as she makes her escape. EXT. TRAINING FIELD - DAY Isolda approaches the training field. Knights and men-at-arms are training on their huge war horses, wheeling and charging in disciplined ranks.

FADE IN: EXT. COAST ROAD, BOULOGNE - DAY A colourful covered wagon trundles along the dirt road, pulled by a well-matched team of sleek horses. Supply wagons and packhorses follow. Flags stream in the breeze coming off the sea. Mounted knights provide an escort, their highly-polished chainmail glinting in the sun. And they keep coming. Hundreds of them. A deliberately dazzling display of wealth and status. SUPER: 1110 AD. The county of Boulogne, on the northern coast of France. The grand procession makes its way towards the imposing castle overlooking the port. EXT. ENTRANCE, BOULOGNE CASTLE - DAY The COUNT OF BOULOGNE (50) takes his place at the entrance, flanked by his household staff as a welcoming committee. INT. BOULOGNE CASTLE / ENTRANCE HALL - DAY Overlooked in the excitement, the Count’s young daughter, MATHILDE (4), finds her view blocked by a forest of legs. Her small hands clench into fists. She pouts. But then she turns and runs towards the staircase. INT. BOULOGNE CASTLE / UPPER CHAMBER - DAY Little Mathilde jumps up to grab the stone ledge of the window. She dangles for a moment - - but can’t pull herself up. She drops back down. Undaunted, she drags a wooden stool towards the window, leaving furrows in the rushes strewn over the floor. Just as the stool topples over, a servant boy, CHRISTIAN (10), grabs hold of it. CHRISTIAN Careful...

Four years ago we created a small pond in our garden and I planted a little water iris, iris versicolour. This year, for the first time, it's flowered.
