1/2 To me it is a little odd: Watts (GW = gigawatts) is energy consumption, one W= one Joule consumed per second. Compute power used to be measured in compute operations, like Flops which are floating point, a type of arithmetic, operations per second. a powerful computer was capable of gigaflops.

Bringing some Veblen-esq perspective into the chat: a reduced carbon footprint is indistinguishable from lower socioeconomic status, voluntary or not. Socioeconomic success is signaled by consumption, direct or vicarious, individually and societally. Poor people don’t fly.

It’s not just taxes. Due to zoning restrictions, there’s little stock of smaller, a.k.a. starter, houses/ condos in the suburbs where we currently live and work. Move? Sure, but where to?
