I love the chronology & use tense

First the dubious motivations & morality of the boys, then finishing with the calf still alive, with his mother, seeing twice what we can see

The poem is written on the night the calf is born, but the speaker knows what will happen tomorrow

I love the intersection between poetry and science.

Here we have the physics of the heart balancing between knowing and unknowing, love and loss, presence and disappearance.

Every line hums with quiet wonder and the ache of trying to hold what won’t stay still.

The last of my family are moving out of Colorado this weekend, so I’m drowning in nostalgia and melancholy today.

“‘This section houses all the stories with happy endings. As you can see, it is not very popular. Even the fireflies avoid this place.’
