Stephen Asma's "On Monsters: An Unnatural History of our Worst Fears" is an EXCELLENT way to start with Monster Theory. Asma isn't the "father" of Monster Theory, but he's a bit more of a casual read than Cohen (who is widely regarded as the "father" of the field).
