A gentle reminder that if we miss the 1.5°C target (and we certainly will), the next target is 1.51°C and not 2°C. We need to keep fighting.

Every tonne of CO₂ emitted makes the job of future CO₂ removal harder, and every 0.01°C of temperature increase makes the world more chaotic and dangerous.

Per @WorldBank projections 691 million people (8.6% of global population) were in #ExtremePoverty (living below $2.15/day) in 2023. Yes that is at pre-pandemic levels, still 691 million too many. blogs.worldbank.org/opendata/pov....
Poverty is back to pre-COVID levels globally, but not for low-income countries
The economic setbacks of the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the largest increase in global extreme poverty in decades. Global poverty has now receded to levels closer to those prior to the pandemic, bu...

Today on the first ever International Day of #CleanEnergy we need to explicitly address extreme poverty in our energy transition pathways.
It will decide whether we invest in maintaining consumption patterns of the uber-rich or in bringing millions out of poverty.

Most of my twitter people have not migrated to Bsky. So posting here feels a bit like shouting not so much into a void as into a crowd of strangers most in their own worlds. So I come to browse.

Carbon removal gets regularly compared to waste collection, but the industry is rapidly becoming something more like plastic recycling: companies that produce a huge, unchecked and worsening waste stream sprinkle it on top off their public engagement to fend off regulation + pretend to do something

CO2 capture and removal is not a solution now, and won’t be one in time to avert the climate catastrophe. You cannot drain an ocean with a teaspoon. Or even a thousand teaspoons.
My biggest fear about CO₂ removal (CDR) isn't that someone will try to deploy it at scale now (who will pay trillions of dollars for that?) but that voters and decision-makers will think we have magical solutions and don't need to decarbonize ASAP.

For the next 3 weeks I will amplify as much as possible youth & activist messaging for #COP28. Please consider doing the same. Youth are our best shot at averting the #ClimateCrisis. We need their voices heard at #COP28

I don't know which key youth groups are on bsky. Please tag if you do.

Imagine a world where no one questions the fact that emissions have to fall sharply, and the most vulnerable populations have to be protected...and the fiercest debates are on whose mitigation plan is the best and whose adaptation plan the most wide-ranging. #COP28
