They are often cooked with other fruit: apples, pears etc. dd them to a pie or crumble. The seeds are high in pectin so you can add them to jams. This is what Jane Grigson has to say about them:

A nice bit of presumably 1970's design. The book is Colin Ward and Anthony Fyson's Streetwork: The Exploding School written in capacity as the education officers for The Town & Country Planning Association. All very much of the era.

It's also important to note the methodology. There has been a significant change in employment patterns over this period: in 1984 ecomonmic participation for men was 88.8% for women 62.8%. The figures now are 83.7% and 74.2% This shift likely had an impact. www.ons.gov.uk/economy/nati...
