![Cao Mo was a man of Lu who served Duke Zhuang of Lu with courage and strength. Duke Zhuang was fond of strength, so he made a general out of Cao Mo, who warred with the Qi and was defeated three times. Fearing [the Qi], Duke Zhuang offered [them] the territory of Sui Town to sue for peace. Yet he continued to retain [Cao Mo] as his general.
Duke Huan of Qi agreed to meet with the Lu at Ke to form an alliance. Duke Huan and Duke Zhuang had already sworn an alliance atop the ceremonial platform when Cao Mo grasped a dagger and attacked Duke Huan of Qi. None of Duke Huan's retainers dared move. When they asked him, "What is it you want general?" Cao Mo replied, "Qi is strong while Lu is weak, so [your] great state's invasion of Lu is already in excess. If now the walls of Lu City were to collapse they would immediately fall on the border with Qi! Milord should consider this!"
Duke Huan then agreed to return all of Lu's occupied territories. As soon as this was said, Cao Mo threw away his dagger, descended the platform and, facing north [towards the sovereigns], proceeded to the ministers' seats. His facial expression was unchanged and his language was just as before. Angered, Duke Huan wished to renege on his agreement, but Guan Zhong said to him, "You mustn't do that! You see, when you covet a small profit in order to gladden yourself, you forsake the trust of all the lords and forfeit the world's support. It would be better to give [the land back]." Only then did Duke Huan go through with reapportioning Lu's invaded territories.
