Midwinter festivals were around before Christianity, eg the Roman festival of Saturnalia. My French ancient history is poor but the British certainly had festivals. The earliest pantomimes were held at Stone Henge, probably.*

The UK shut down about a week after France. I was in the south of France when Macron made his announcement giving folk 48 (?) hours to prepare for lockdown. We had to get back to the UK. France was closed as we drove up, ghostly even. Back in the UK, everything was still open. Pubs, shops etc
