THE MEAT KINGS! (INC.) OF BROOKLYN HEIGHTS.

Bows from last evening’s performance of this pertinent reflection of America’s current blue collar tribulations, exacerbated by ICE raids and lack of due process.

At Sadler’s Wells for the extraordinary Nederlands Dans Theater & Complicité collaboration FIGURES IN EXTINCTION.

Evenings like this, remind me why I make an effort to attend and review circa 160-170 productions per year. Breathtaking, inventive, exact, provoking, mellifluous.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ OTHELLO
Haymarket Theatre Royal.

Other productions chose to wallow in the murky depths of mental castigation. This OTHELLO is brazenly pitched and entirely accessible. It speaks to a modern West End audience in ways few have managed.

I once spent a jolly afternoon (around 1998/9) with Prunella Scales at the Actors’ Centre working on audition speeches.

I was later assigned responsibility for the pineapple someone gave her as we chatted and strolled to the bus stop.

She was a dear soul brimming with energy and vim.

Bloody awful, “Bloody Mary and the Nine Day Queen” at Union Theatre. Friday evening’s pre-set for this overwritten, overwrought and overlong musical treatment of Lady Jane Grey’s brief tenure at the top in Tudor times.

Exactly 4 years ago today, Leslie Bricusse died aged 90.

I met him just the once (at the OXO Tower restaurant in early 2000 when he was dining with Bill Nighy). He seemed amazed I knew who he was. Such a genuinely sweet and humble soul and an amazingly talented songwriter.

“I'm really glad I didn't get married. I'm an oddball. I remember in high school, this guy came up to me and said, ‘One day you're going to make a good wife.’ And I thought, ‘I don't want to be a wife. No.’”

RIP Diane Keaton, Oscar winner for “Annie Hall”.
