The old assumption was that could make it as a creative if you had enough persistence and a small amount of talent. Now, I'm not so sure.

I rewatched the first ep last night and it had more going for it than I remembered. Gary Bakewell is poor and the soap-style coverage isn't helpful… too much done in close-up or cramped two-shots. But the location lighting and dressing is excellent – much better than 2005 Doctor Who, for instance.

I think there's a halfway house approach that more TV could aim for. Until it wrapped recently, Neighbours shot with two cameras in studio and on location, which struck a good balance between capturing a sense of live performance while allowing for extra single-camera flourishes.

I remember wanting to like Neverwhere much more than I actually did. A noble effort, but my tolerance for Gaiman's self-consciously quirky dialogue is pretty low, particularly when delivered in irritating sing-song by actors who should know better.
