Further to my recent post from the British Library, here’s a follow-up from Birmingham Central Library. Any excuse to visit a library is good enough for me…

Cambridge city centre is so affluent it seems almost opulent. It’s difficult to believe it’s in the same country as Burnley (my hometown). Whatever happened to regional policy?

Smallbrook Queensway in Birmingham. Despite being a huge fan of Brutalist architecture I struggle a bit with this one…

Here lies the grave of John Loudon McAdam: Engineer and Road Builder. He invented the process known as ‘macadamisation’ for building roads with a smooth hard surface. An invention which undoubtedly changed the modern world. I stumbled across his uncelebrated grave in Moffat in the Scottish Borders.

Found this on my bookshelf. It’s dated 1982 and cost £3.95. I obviously needed no convincing that computers were the way forward - I just wasn’t sure what to do with them.

Today I visited Swarkestone Bridge over the River Trent (south of Derby). This was the most southerly point reached by the Jacobite Army on 4th December 1745. They retreated from here all the way to Culloden. What would have happened had they carried on to London? #Jacobites

This is the location where the A329(M) crosses the River Loddon near Reading. It’s the site of a famous falsework collapse on 24 October 1972. Three construction workers killed and ten injured when the part-poured deck fell in the river due to a design error. The site remains very prone to flooding.
