Environmental engineer using GMO plants to fight pollution. Interests: indoor air, N2Oreductase, CROPS, bioremediation, WWTPs, soils. Opinions mine.
60 yrs bike commuting.
Another one: shorter, easier to read. But no rhyme or rhythm.

Thinking about pro-biotech bumper stickers. Stickers are like haiku. They should have an arc. But very short.

This one is too dense, but just about readable. High contrast is good

Examining satellite CO2 data from OCO, it looks to me that in Spring, CO2 levels go up sharply at high latitudes & have a less pronounced maximum at mid-latitudes (35-45deg). The latter corresponds to crop regions & former to decomposition & mineralization of frozen biomass maybe

Here are CO2 levels in northern spring, peak of decomposition, 5/2015. The bright red areas indicate the highest CO2 levels were over rural areas of N America & Asia.

During spring, rotting biomass including crop residues dominate global CO2 emissions. This is the mechanism of the Keeling cycle. f

Zooming in on the panel for 7/2015 we can see low CO2 levels (blue) across the land area of northern hemisphere that seem to be correlated with agricultural areas and forests, likely due to CO2 uptake by summer photosynthesis. 2/3

Where & when are the most intense CO2 emissions? This is figure 4 from the 2016 JPL paper showing atmospheric concentrations of CO2 observed by the OCO-2 satellite. It shows the "breathing" of the planet caused by photosynthesis and subsequent decomposition of biomass in the northern hemisphere. 1/3

Corn stover is a big global source of CR. Stover can be used as fodder, but it is low in nutrients & livestock dislike it. Rarely used in US IMO. Farmers might take $30-50 per t DW corn stover bale delivered locally. CROPS is so efficient that we could sell verified credits for <$100/tCO2e now.

Here's a picture of a prototype of a 6 ft3 biofilter with a cheap fan HEPA filter (CADR = 110 cfm) pulling air through foliage of 6 plants. I threw it together in my shop as a concept demo in 2019. We can now calculate CADR for benzene = 64 cfm for this biofilter.

Results from our plant bioreactor showing removal (degradation) of benzene from air by our GMO pothos ivy expressing mammalian cytochrome P450 2e1 at concentrations similar to those found in homes.

've been trying to get NSF & USDA ARS interested without luck. They don't like risk. Waiting to hear from NSF on latest now.
Big potential. If 32% of global crop plants were N2OR modified, N2O levels could be stabilized. 100% could bring N2O to pre-industrial levels in 40 yrs.
