I am who I am. West Brit Scot living in France. Originally from Middlesborough via Manchester with London parents so a bit of a mixed British.
But we could easily save the £70k times the no. Of UKIP MEP or so by not paying them the money they are either now or about to receive for sc***ing the country over.

You need to be at least 1/4 Irish to apply.

This is an example of what annoys many who made the effort to become resident

Exactly, it kept us out in the 1960's and unfortunately will keep us out for the foreseeable future.

Thing is if we are approach EU membership as exceptionalism we will never get anywhere.

Country of birth. Equally many from the likes of the Caribbean and India had British citizenship from birth so never needed to apply for British citizenship even though their country of birth has gained independence. I see many apply for Irish citizenship but have no affinity or relationship there.

Don't think the electorate really understands citizenship. Many mix it up with residency others think it is something that can be bought or sold. See the recent discussion on ILR, why must someone who has spent their live in the UK have to take British citizenship, many would have to renounce their

Whether moving within the UK or across a border one really needs to take full responsibility for your decision. Like looking at schooling, council tax rates etc. between different areas is only your responsibility.

Everyone has to live with the consequences of their action. (OR OUR PEOPLES ACTIONS)

My boss was Italian and lived in the UK since he was 9 yrs old, there was no need to become British, but now at nearly 70 married to a brit he is having to make a decision incase reform or tories get in. Other with young kids have already made the decision to move abroad but that is the new world.
October 24, 2025 at 5:54 PM
No, the problem is you did not act in the 4 years you had to make a decision and now have to live with the consequences. The days after the referendum I lost half my projects so had to review what my future would be. Many others I know had to make hard decisions and acted in time.

But you do to keep your residency, and after 3 months you had register in the country you are in. This is post brexit for those who were resident before brexit.

The main thing is everything changed with the brexit vote, so now you have to live in the new third country world
October 24, 2025 at 5:09 PM
But if you registered as living in an EU country you only had to stay there 6 months and you had relative freedom elsewhere. Problem is many missed making the correct opertunity. Equally there was 4 years to make your choices.
October 24, 2025 at 12:25 PM
Tax is part of any equation and cannot be ignored either before or after brexit. The DTT are between two countries, but you can't say you live in one country for 9 months but you are a tax resident in another without a very complex situation where you need expert advise.
October 24, 2025 at 12:22 PM
Everyone had to make a decision, some like me chosed to be legal residents abroad but are now restricted in time they can spend in UK because of UK tax reasons.
October 24, 2025 at 12:01 PM
I struggle with these peoples definition of "contributions". A nurse may not be paid much and not pay much in tax, but their contribution to the well being of British citizens far exceeds that on someone who is paid £60k.
October 23, 2025 at 5:10 PM
There is a huge difference in the border in Ireland and Scotland/England. The former was an administrative county border before partition with numerous crossings approx1 per mile, the latter was created through conflict and geography with few crossing due to geography.
October 23, 2025 at 11:36 AM
They you will be asked to leave. Facebook has a number of posts of those overstaying and being banned from schengen for a year or two. Plus those who applied for residency by made no tax declaration being asked to leave.
October 22, 2025 at 7:31 PM
Interesting the presenter has now been taken off air because of racist remarks on his twitter account. As for no harm, if you are not resident but try to work or live beyond your visa allowances then you are a tax cheat which harms all. This surely is the Tory point, if you don't want to contribute.
October 22, 2025 at 7:28 PM
One has to ask, if we remove a large number of foreign citizens from the UK what will be the consequences, will UK citizens in that country have to move back to the UK. How will the government House them. This ignores the economic and representational harm.
October 22, 2025 at 7:22 AM
The tories cannot understand what being a citizen is. I may have acquired Irish citizenship but struggle to think of any reason to resign my British citizenship.
October 20, 2025 at 7:20 AM
So you want to spend 265 days abroad and you think this should allow you to not pay tax abroad. The tax codes existed before brexit and applied before and after brexit.
