I make things and break things and sometimes I bake things. I have an old house full of books.
The Powell's link doesn't seem to work and I couldn't find this in the Wayback Machine. Is the NPS easay posted up someplace else?

The robot can't figure you out so it's throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks. I call it a good sign. May your ads ever be shite.

How big is your yard? If it molders in a corner would you think it was a reproach, or charming? And do you mind if the wasps move in?

Pretty sure that's an accurate summary of the second or third chapter of "Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat"

And I guess I was reading this closer to 2013 or so? Which makes my faulty memory more forgivable, lol.

Keep going. Make stuff. Do stuff. Care for your people. And take your meds.

Maybe there are no throwaway gags. Maybe all art matters to someone, somewhere. Maybe we can't ever understand how we touch others' lives.

And I think about that one throwaway gag a lot. Probably weekly. As I get older, it seems more and more true. Both the principals, and the difficulty of holding their tension.

"In for a penny, in for a pound", and

"Why throw good money after bad?"

Anyway, there was this one throwaway gag where somebody's ship is spiraling into the sun and the character is struggling with the controls and deciding whether to ditch out, and in the narrative there's this aside about how life is a constant negotiation between two competing principals:

But if your torpedoes are dry, how do they sink Nazi battleships?

Yes thank you! Looks like they're not readily available here but you've given me inspiration to look for new things.

I mean, I would totally switch to Celsius for that.

Having just moved to a house where the oven can both burn food and leave it raw *at the same time*, I am extraordinarily envious. What kind of oven is this? I wonder if I can get one here.
November 22, 2024 at 6:55 PM
Wait what does "programmed in the oven" mean? Is this a Dutch thing? Does it require a Dutch Oven?

It feels somehow strange to me that even loads of tech investment, nothing can really improve on a notebook page scrawled with a bunch of phone numbers and what they're for and who I got them from. But maybe that perception of strangeness is actually the problem. 4/4

Back in the Bay Area now, I am kind of having mixed feelings about the online reviews. They're helpful, absent other information. But in general, referrals from people I know are better. Text message and rumor are king, if you know who to text. 3/4

When I moved to Salt Lake City, I was shocked to discover a community run on "text message and rumor". Public information about private interactions was hard to get, and I was often bewildered trying to get basic services like someone to mow my grass. 2/4
