Our paper is out in PNAS: We decoded how NorA (S. aureus) exports diverse antibiotics.

We found energetic efficiency drives polyspecificity—efficient pumps can export many drugs, while inefficient ones are limited. Also: distal residues can still drive specificity.

We used deep mutational scanning to learn how NorA, a multidrug efflux pump from S. aureus, exports so many dissimilar drugs. The role of energy efficiency in this phenomenon is especially interesting and satisfying. Check it out:
