Michael Schadek shared how the City of #Columbus (OH) & the John Glenn College developed an innovative protest management approach focused on emphasising de-escalation & #dialogue to reduce tensions & prevent violence. Since its launch, the model has been replicated in cities across the globe. 4/6

The City of Philadelphia (PA) & the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations’ multi-disciplinary Interagency Civil Rights Task Force & Rapid Response Team work with higher-ed institutions like Temple University to facilitate mediation & dialogues with stakeholders ahead of protests. 3/6

Doreen Garlid, Vice Mayor of Tempe (AZ) 🇺🇸 highlighted the city’s long-standing partnership with the Arizona State University, including Tim Gomez's co-funded role focused on strengthening engagement between the university, students & the #localgov. 2/6

National-local cooperation #NLC was a key focus, with the 🇲🇼 Ministry of Local Governments & Lilongwe City 🇲🇼sharing their joint effort to launch city-level multi-actor Peace & Unity Committees — an outcome of #NLC dialogues facilitated by the #ESA Regional Hub since 2024. 5/6

Refugee & migration management also featured strongly. The #StrongCities twinning between Koboko 🇺🇬 & Musina 🇿🇦 — two border towns facing high cross-border migration — inspired #Musina to launch a one-stop migration help desk with guidance from Koboko & the #ESA Regional Hub. 4/6

We also heard how with support from the #StrongCities, Masaka 🇺🇬 drew on youth advisors & lessons from Mombasa 🇰🇪 to launch regular dialogues with young people to understand their needs better & deliver joint radio & community-led campaigns against hate & extremism. 3/6

The roundtable featured powerful impact case studies, such as the #StrongCities peer exchange between Nansana 🇺🇬& Stellenbosch 🇿🇦. This collaboration led to a Neighbourhood Watch in Nansana, which Mayor Regina credited for improved trust in #localgov & made communities safer. 2/6
