I'd argue no. 1 is equally visual, in fact I use them more as a diagram to support e.g. simplifying (not necessarily drawing the specific algebra tile shapes but 'counters' labelled with variables.

Secondary: 1. Algebra tiles (including two colour counters in this as they're essentially the same) 2. Area model for multiplication and linking in to algebra/distributive law 3. Ratio tables for anything with a multiplicative relationship

No, we've got a high proportion of EAL and not encountered an issue. We teach the word with the place value table first

We use 'exchange' which most students have used at KS2. Thorough knowledge of place value feeding into the algorithm.
