Our results strongly support Integration Models, which posit that word representations are shared across language modalities. /end

Results were clear: The same brain networks were activated in production and comprehension.

Topographically in the motor cortex (with stronger lip activity for bilabial words and stronger tongue activity for alveolar words), and distributed in the temporal cortex /4

To test this, we scanned (fMRI) participants (n=37) while they both named aloud object names and passively listened to the same words. All words were minimal pairs only differing in their first phoneme (bilabial words like ‘Monkey’ vs. alveolar words like ‘Donkey’). /3

After Albert, Friedemann was my scientific guide, and now both my mentors are gone. 😔

Guess I’ll never get to beat you at chess my friend.

I’ll miss you, but remember you with a smile.

⏱️Importantly, in an individual control experiment where everything was identical except that one of the interlocutor’s was replaced with a loudspeaker, the typical prediction effect for picture naming was the same, but the prediction effect for replying with a related word disappeared completely! /5
October 10, 2025 at 5:12 PM
⏱️In predictable contexts picture naming was faster (typical prediction effect), but interestingly, the reply given by the partner was even faster… twice (!) as fast compared to the interlocutor who named the picture to which the actual predictable content applied (a dyadic prediction effect) /4

💬 In a simple semantic association game, one interlocutor names a picture (eg dog), and the partner needs to reply with a semantically related word (eg cat).

Prior to this interaction, contex could be predictable for the upcoming picture (´man’s best friend is a…’) or not (‘outside there is a…)./3

The first publication of the #ERC project ‘LaDy’ is a fact and it’s an important one I think:

We show that word processing and meaning prediction is fundamentally different during social interaction compared to using language individually!

More exciting work by Elin Runnqvist together with Christian Kell:

In this theory paper they propose a unified framework showing how abstract language monitoring and concrete speech motor control are intertwined.

Done! Daria successfully defended her PhD thesis!

And that in front of an incredible jury who are the absolute top on this topic: @annaborghi.bsky.social , @pennypexman.bsky.social , @gabriellavigliocco.bsky.social

So proud of her!

bravo of course also to Jo Ziegler and Núria Gala!

I guess we can all agree now that adding ‘la Butte #Montmarte’ to the final Paris stage of the #TdF2025 was a wonderful idea. The people, the surroundings, the battle between #vanaert and #pogacar… chills.

Pogi in yellow, green en polka. It’s the Merckx period all over. Am I -as some- unhappy about that? Hell no! The ‘aliens’, with uber 👽 Pogacar leading the way, are giving us spectacular cycling

Happy #GrandDepart Lille!!!

Pogacar vs Vingegaard for yellow

Evenepoel vs Roglic vs Rodriguez vs Almeida vs… for the podium (or maybe yellow?)

Philipsen vs Merlier vs Milan for green

Van Aert vs Van der Poel for everything else

Instead of focusing so much fear surrounding #AI on that ‘it’ may somehow replace us, we should rather focus on dipshits like this wanting to use these powerful tools to re-write history, facts and science.

New 📝 ❕

Daria’s first PhD paper is a tour de force: 7 experiments across different languages and with over 1000 participants suggest that socialness and emotion are task-driven, not fixed features of word meaning.
