Euclid-class poster, lowkey trainwreck. (He/Him, also cool w/ singular they)
Let’s be fair: he clearly has at least a passing familiarity with Death Note.

And... that's a wrap. I don't have a good conclusion to this thread, but it's really impressive to see what Square's artists were able to do with such limited resources back in the day- it's amazing how well they were able to render different surfaces.

Last boss Xagor, going with the cancerblob metaphor. I like the normal version, but the 'upgrade version' with the extra mouths is a bit much.

I'm a little surprised that the collection version of the game- which cleaned up a lot of other potential copyrighted names- left 'Balor' here. I didn't quite pick it up as a kid, but in retrospect that's pretty clearly Nyarlathotep.

The last boss' castle, complete with nonspecific goo and floating cancerblobs as obstacles. Like I said, increasingly popular.

There's that Lovecraft influence again, but the shading on this blob of skulls is nice. "Cancer/Viscera/Skull Blob" becomes an increasingly popular boss design as you make your way through the game.

Another monster with a weird mouth, I suspect that if I knew a little more about the technical side of GB graphics, the size of Jorgandr's sprite would be lowkey extremely impressive.

Rare misfire; I'm not quite sure what's going on with Dahak's mouth there. Incidentally, this is the relatively rare JRPG that takes influence from HP Lovecraft- it went over my head as a kid but I can really see it now that I know a little more about the Cthulhu Mythos.

I love the big round pustules on the octopus' head there, too; the difference between it's eyes and the robot's single eye is pretty nice too, especially given the small size of the sprite.

Love the effect on the owl guy's lantern on the left. The shading on the shading on the robot's single big eye is pretty nice too, especially given the small size of the sprite- you can tell it's a shiny glass surface despite the artists only having a few pixels and colors to work with.

It's pretty standard but I do like the shadow effects on the stairs- gives the area more texture than you'd see with a flat staircase, and looks a lot more interesting. Shows what you can do with some slight variations in intensity.

Some other cool effects here- the swirly portal/aura behing Thoth and the smooth metal shading on AirMaid's body on the right- I dig the effects there. The three effects- Gargoyle (last post), Thoth, AirMaid- really show what you can do w/ stippling and varying shading to imply different surfaces!

Love the use of stippling to make the gargoyle in the center here look like he has scales; I'll have to remember that trick for rough surfaces.
Also shoutout to the Dulhallan carrying his brain in a jar; not sure I parsed that as a kid.

One technique that stands out early on: looks like, on the world map at least, only tiles you can interact with use the darkest color in the Game Boy's palette- it's an easy way of making notable things stand out.

Another big change over the earlier games: Enemies of various sizes in battle. SaGa 1 & 2 only allowed 3 dudes of uniform size, evenly spaced. SaGa 3 fits more on screen by allowing them to be stackced and variable-size.

Right off the jump, the town sprites are a lot more detailed than the equivalents in the first two games in the series. It's interesting to see what a difference changing the colors on the cobblestone paths makes.

So I've actually been meaning to put this together for a couple years, but never quite had the time. Working with a bunch of Game Boy-palette artwork has gotten it back on my mind though, so.... SaGa/Final Fantasy Legend 3 pixel art appreciation thread!

At this point I’m no longer sure which of these paths to label “taking the games off my phone to prevent me from wasting time” and which to label “putting the games back on my phone to prevent me from doomscrolling”
