I swear I didn’t do this on purpose, but here are my #Top25 shows of 2025 broken down by network/streamer (in no particular order). Although really #Adolescence and then everything else this year, that show was in a league of its own.

Watching #TheLowdown finale tonight, I’m reminded how hard it is to finish something well, and how rarely we see it done right. Sterlin Harjo, Ethan Hawke and Co. have absolutely nailed this finale (as well as the rest of the season). Epic soundtrack, tons of heart and just plain fun. Excellent.

Finally finished season 5 of #SlowHorses, and I’m convinced that, pound-for-pound, there is not a better serialized drama on TV right now (although #TheDiplomat comes close). Both shows are master classes in character specificity and plot. #Apple should be commended for curating this masterpiece.

After a break with #Netflix for awhile, I’m back and am working my way through #Diplomat Season 3. I was worried the shine would start to wear on this show but wow, it just keeps delivering. There isn’t much this show lacks, amazing writing, perfect cast and delivery, just excellent, no notes.

I’ve been enjoying Sterlin Harjo’s new show on #FX / #Hulu called #Lowdown. It’s been improving each week but man this week’s episode was just spectacular. I would watch these 2 in just about anything! The whole cast is great really but Hawke and Dinklage this week was just magic to behold.

I know I haven’t posted much lately but #FilmClub on #BBCThree was so weird and wonderful. It unfolded into a sweet albeit dysfunctional love story with zero throwaway actors. It’s a great study in character specificity and how you can do so much with so little. Punches way above its weight.

Ten years late on this, but if you’ve never watched #River, it’s simply fantastic. One of the best 6-episode miniseries ever made. Masterfully written and acted, they’ve taken a narrative “gimmick” and turned it into a textbook example of how to do it right. On BritBox in the US, just excellent.

#HereWeGo Series 3 has dropped in the UK on #BBC. Easily one of my favorite pandemic-era shows, it has maintained its manic stories and broadly drawn comedy. It’s stupid fun and never fails to deliver.

#TheAssassin on #Prime is excellent, really action-packed but tempered with humor. Hawes and Highmore are fantastic but really the whole cast is exceptional. The problem is it’s only available in the UK (and Stan in AUS?), for US subscribers you will need a VPN to watch it but very much worth it.

#KarenPirie s2 has premiered and I am so looking forward to it. It’s been a long wait and absence has made my heart grow fonder. Part way in and I couldn’t be happier…

#StarTrek #StrangeNewWorlds is back on #Paramount+ and hasn’t lost a step. A reminder the first episode is a “part 2” of last season’s finale so it helps to rewatch. As irritated as I am about Paramount’s lawsuit settlement, it’s still great to see this show back, firing on all cylinders.

#DeptQ on #Netflix had some trouble grabbing my attention, but quickly won me over. It’s a bit like Slow Horses - Homicide Edition (in the best possible way). Ignore the reviews that talk about miscasting, they fit well. Created by Scott Frank of #QueensGambit fame, excellent & we need more please.

A little late to the game on this one but #Adolescence on #Netflix was simply phenomenal. A gut-punch-emotional story, peerless actors and a technical filming feat that defies explanation. A tough story to watch but so necessary today, I wouldn’t necessarily advise binging it but it’s must-see.

#Etoile is the newest #Prime series from the famed Palladino duo. It is perhaps their weightiest/mature effort to date but still retains its rapid-fire banter & wit. Lots of familiar faces and if you are remotely a fan of their work, it’s a must-see. I miss the rich characters & repertoire already.

I’ve always enjoyed #Elsbeth but felt it was one of Michelle & Robert King’s lesser shows (compared to their other masterpieces). However, the 2nd season finale was just spectacular. The returning villains, the musical production, just fantastic across the board.

#SafeHarbor was a surprisingly good show from the Netherlands NL that needs to be picked by a streamer for US viewing. I generally don’t care for “drug trade” shows but this one had a new angle and was very well told. Highly Recommended.

Been busy with a new job lately but playing catchup. #DaredevilBornAgain on #Disney+ was…fine. There were maybe 3 episodes where I felt good about where things were going but overall, I would say middling. Hated the “man on the street” interview stuff, missing characters from the past hurt I think.

#WhiteLotus s3 finale did a good job wrapping up each storyline, even if the season as a whole maybe languished needlessly. They also seemed to push the envelope with too much sex and violence, but I shouldn’t be surprised given the show’s history. Even Chekhov’s gun made an appearance…

The 1923 finale on #Paramount+ was a very good end to a mostly bleak season. I’m not sure we got a happy ending, rather one with some justice and much revenge. Taylor & Co. again seemingly end the episode 2 or 3 times and ultimately dilute rather than punctuate it but I guess that’s nitpicking.

Finally pounded through the first half of #BerlinER on #AppleTV+. As I’ve mentioned before, medical dramas are not my jam and this does nothing to change my mind. Impossible not to compare it to #ThePitt which bests it at every turn. This is grittier and more expansive but to me less compelling.
March 31, 2025 at 2:20 AM
#Reacher s3 finale and season as a whole was good on #Prime. Very violent but sometimes excessively brutal, which I guess the books are too, just seems maybe harder to watch than read? I still like the whole show & casting but something still keeps it from top-tier status, can’t put my finger on it.

#TheStudio on #AppleTV+ dropped its first 2 episodes tonight and while ep1 does a decent setup job, the 2nd is plain amazing, full-stop. The show is very meta and “inside-baseball” but works on many levels with great writing, sarcasm, stacked cast and tons of cameos. Another likely hit for Apple.

#LastOneLaughingUK on #Prime here in the US is another fantastic show from the UK that finds any dumb reason to put a cast of comedians together and just watch the magic unfold. Why the US doesn’t do more shows like this I’ll never understand but glad Amazon is bringing this over, great stuff.

Finally got around to starting #GrossePointeGardenSociety on #Peacock, gives off Desperate Housewives vibes (in a good way) and a strong cast. Quirky and breezy, not the first thing I’ll get to when I sit down but decent filler.
