If you get overwhelmed, make sure you apologize. Give them an extra treat, a little kiss, a new toy. Tell them goodnight for me — they are so loved, and their time is so short. They make everyone around them so happy, and I'm grateful to those of you who make them happy.

Losing my friends is hard, and I have lost so many of them lately. They all lived long happy lives, passing at home from age or health conditions. It's a comfort knowing they were loved and happy. But it still hurts. Please hug your babies tight every day. Tell them you love them. Let them sniff.

gets easier. Sweet Jewel passed away this week, and my heart physically hurts. She lived a long and happy life, and I wish her last moments hadn't been in pain. I feel sad and guilty for not letting her sniff longer or walk farther, and just sticking to routine — she was always so happy to see me.
