tl;dr the education system is shit and I would probably be dumber were not for people actually passionate for teaching, no matter how controversial or taboo the topic

Unsurprisingly, the next class before we actually focused on debate, we briefly touched on sex-ed because everyone except me was from 8th grade and they were discussing their sex-ed classes, and that little 30 min convo was so much more in-depth than the ACTUAL sex-ed class I'd have next year

...that session was the first time I'd ever hear the word "transgender" too. While I still feel the definition is kinda outdated and not representative of the plurality of the trans experience, it was THE only approach I had until quite recently.

...I live in a conservative family. If my parents were born in the US, my mother would probably vote Republican. So every now and then I'd hear stuff like "ughh, these gays have their parade again, they did one last year" but I never understood what exactly "the gays" were...

...and yeah it's funny because like that definition doesn't exactly match my experience. I do admit that I was born as a man, and now I'm a woman. But yeah, I now have much better knowledge because I'm a literal adult now but that was my first approach to the actual LGBTQ+ community...

..."now transgender people are people that believe they were born in the wrong gender, for example a trans woman believes they were born in a man's body, but spiritually they have a woman's spirit" and this definition struck me as odd because "huh, that's kinda weird"...

..."so lesbians are women that are into women, gays are just a word that generally refers to anyone that's into their own gender, and bisexuals are into either gender"
"now, so far we've been talking about people's romantic interests, the T stands for transgender"...

...and most of the time the first 30 minutes of the class would be related to like current events on the news or like anything that wasn't related to a proper formatted debate
I don't know why but the topic was brought up and she just started talking about each of the letters...

I can't speak of the US' educational system, but at least in my case the closest explanation of "the shitload of letters in the LGBTQIA+" was during like 7th grade? It wasn't during a proper class, it was in my debate after-school class
the teacher was rlly cool, she had this nonchalant aura...
