Honestly I'd be down for either or! Again it's a great way to bring mates together who are away from each other. But I can also see why losing that "gamey" feeling can feel weird

Not sure what game you're specifically talking about here, but for me digital VR board games would be better for the online play. Most of my friends have moved away now, so this is a nice chance to play board games in "the same space" cause nobody's travelling hours for a night of risk
