Yearning Lu Guang 💙
When Lu Guang wakes up, he’s alone with a massive headache. There’s a water bottle next to him, a sticky note attached to it with Cheng Xiaoshi’s elegantly fluid scrawl: Drink up! Lu Guang scoffs, but that only seems to make the headache worse. He takes a big gulp of water and lies back down to stare at the ceiling for a few minutes as he tries to convince himself to get up. His sheets smell like Cheng Xiaoshi. It’s been so, so long. No one would ever know. He presses his face against Cheng Xiaoshi’s side of the pillow and breathes.

“Are you okay?” she asks tentatively. “I’m fine.” He has to be, there’s no alternative. If he isn’t fine then… “It’s okay if you’re not,” Qiao Ling says and something inside of him breaks. “Cheng Xiaoshi might be my brother, but you’re family too. I hope you know that.” She pulls him into a hug and he doesn’t know what to do. She’s so small. A presence larger than life with so much strength, but small and fragile all the same. Lu Guang has tried so hard to forget what she looked like with life drained out of her. He puts a hand on her upper back, barely touching, awkwardly returning the hug. “He’ll come around,” she says with conviction. “You’re the best thing that’s happened to him and he knows that, even if he can’t see it right now.” There’s a lump forming in his throat. He doesn’t feel like the best thing that’s happened to anyone. If anything, he feels like a bundle of nightmares and regrets. But for some reason, Qiao Ling sees something worth keeping around. Cheng Xiaoshi used to, too. He takes a deep breath and lets her go.

Captain Xiao brings them new cases frequently. Lu Guang does not tell Cheng Xiaoshi about all of them. Some he can help with just from looking at the photos. Others have the photographer go through things too horrible for Lu Guang to even consider sending Cheng Xiaoshi in there. Some are just dead-ends. Working together and seeing Cheng Xiaoshi’s abilities first-hand has made Captain Xiao more understanding of the limits Lu Guang sets, but they still get into arguments every now and then. “Why don’t you let the kid decide for himself, huh?” Captain Xiao says once he’s grown tired of Lu Guang’s no’s. “Because he’s too kind for his own good and would help anyone who asks nicely,” Lu Guang answers plainly, pushing down his annoyance. It’s not the first time they’ve had this argument, nor is it going to be the last. “Don’t use that kindness against him. Even actors have a hard time coming out of their roles sometimes, how much worse do you think it’s for him who has to actually live through it? Give him some room to breathe.” Captain Xiao at least has the sense to look chastised. They spend another few minutes going back and forth about frequency and harshness of the dives, but in this Lu Guang is a tough negotiator. If Cheng Xiaoshi wants to help, Lu Guang will let him - but not until he’s made damn sure the police have exhausted every other resource. Once Captain Xiao leaves, Lu Guang sighs and starts for the stairs to wake Cheng Xiaoshi from his nap so he can take over manning the front. He stops on the second step. Cheng Xiaoshi is sitting at the top of the stairs, arms around his legs. “How much of that did you hear?” Lu Guang asks, continuing up until they’re at a level. “You don’t have to protect me,” Cheng Xiaoshi says quietly, which Lu Guang takes to mean he heard pretty much all of it. “I can take care of myself.” “I know you can,” Lu Guang replies calmly. “But I’d rather you didn’t have to.” “What about you?” Cheng Xiaoshi looks up at him. “Who takes care of you?” Lu Guang sits down next to him. Just close enough to touch. “You do.” “I would if you’d let me.” He’s somewhat bemused by the trace of bitterness in Cheng Xiaoshi’s voice. “You think I don’t?” Cheng Xiaoshi scoffs. “Sure, you let me cook you meals and small things like that but you don’t… You don’t tell me when things bother you. And you’re always trying to fix things by yourself instead of asking for help.” “I asked you to help me carry that box just yesterday.” “You know what I mean.” He does. After all, he’s intimately familiar with his own flaws. It’s just that this isn’t something he can easily remedy; it’s deeply ingrained for a reason. “It’s not about you,” he lies. “I’m just…” “Yeah, yeah. You’re just like that, I get it. But it would be nice if you’d lean on me a bit more.” Lu Guang sighs. Leans a little closer and puts his head on Cheng Xiaoshi’s shoulder. He’s warm and smells like home. “Not what I meant, but I’ll take it,” Cheng Xiaoshi chuckles and rests his head against Lu Guang’s.
