The headline does the chap a disservice, especially given that the quote in full is:

In fairness, that's kind of what the chap was saying.

They come across very badly in the first few paragraphs, but later on I did have some sympathy over this bit.

Looks like they were hit with this "chicken and egg" situation while grieving.
