I am an over the hill retired principal and teacher, a family man blessed by a wonderful wife and a son and daughter of whom I am very proud, a person of faith within the Anglican/Episcopal Christian tradition. I despise Fascism, hence Maga Republicans.

My dad, behind the gun in this vintage photo, with two of his fellow soldiers risked their lives fighting against Fascism in France, Belgium, and Germany in World War II. Now it is our turn to fight Fascism, not abroad, but within our own country. Have a mindful Veterans Day, 2025.

Laurel and I spent several hours at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois, today. This summer the arboretum is featuring oversized, multi-colored metallic sculptures of various creatures. My favorite is Spectra the Snail, occupying the top of a hill requiring a fairly steep ascent.

So Trump is accepting a luxury plane from the Qatari royal family as a personal gift. What happened to the Emoluments Clause of the U.S. Constitution?

When a so-called peace conference includes one of the belligerents, the one that started the war, and not the other, the nation attacked, the outcome is not going to be peace, but rather a forced surrender. It’s Munich-style appeasement all over again.

There are so many graves of children in the Colonial Park
Cemetery in Savannah, Georgia, probably consequent to the absence of vaccines for childhood illnesses. And now we have an anti-Vaxer heading the federal oversight of health care.😞

I’ve always found this sculpture on the Savannah riverfront moving. It commemorates the thousands of Africans, kidnapped from their homes, unloaded from fetid slave ships and sold here into slavery. A poignant poem by Maya Angelou is inscribed on the monument.

Our accommodations in the Savannah Historic District, on the outside looking like the warehouse it was, on the inside a very pleasant hotel. I love adaptive reuses of old buildings, a far better alternative to tearing them down.

In one of Savannah’s historic squares, there lies this monument to
a historic renaming. I’m sure the current administration in Washington would like this to be undone.

This is my favorite photo of the start of a voyage of the Beaver Island ferry between Charlevoix, Michigan, and Beaver Island on a very blustery day. Laurel and I have survived several such crossings in the many years we’ve been going to the island.
