My uncle is recovering slowly but surely. Every day he has more movement and control in his affected limbs. His aphasia has vastly improved.

Being an adult and seeing the people who love meet their humanity and mortality is so frightening but also beautiful. Because it’s only in these wildly fragile states do we see the deepest depths of love!

My parents divorced in 2020 but my dad helped raise my Bruncle he was 7 when my parents got married. When my dad calls the hospital my uncle cries. It was my father who carried him out of my gramma’s funeral.

My mom’s other maternal brother comes to the hospital in shades because he can’t see his brother in that bed without crying. My mom’s paternal brother (literally no relation to the one in hospital) has shown up a dozen times.

He spent his 42 birthday in the rehabilitation hospital. He had so many visitors it was like a full on party! He kept crying because he was so happy! So many friends from work, and sports (he’s a referee) have shown up to show love!

And my Bruncle is the most tender hearted of his siblings. Maybe cause he’s the baby. But also it’s clear he is a wonderful man and friend because the way SOOOO many people have shown up for him!

Nothing like a life altering health emergency 6 weeks after burying your mother (my gramma) to fuck your life up, right?

Oddly I didn’t attend a funeral at a funeral home until I was 10 or 11 and thought it was so weird! But also I was heavily churched as a kid lol.

As a result funerals are just a part of life for me. Black funerals specifically. I visited the gambit of churches in my small hometown because of all these funerals.
