Germany stepping up is great, but this is a time of political instability in Germany, and in combination with soaring approval ratings of AfD that’s an uneasy combination. Not so much Merz but the uncertain future of leadership in the coming decades are cause for concern.

I don’t know, these guys are saving money by not having to properly dispose of their old nets themselves.
Happy if it serves a purpose, also because discarded fishing nets are horrifically dangerous to wildlife.
I just don’t love the way it’s being framed as a selfless act.

To be fair, the pipeline that feeds Hungary‘s crude oil runs *through* Ukraine. They could stop transfer whenever they wanted.
Gas seems to come via Turkey, which means it would need to pass through Bulgaria (in EU & NATO), which could also turn it off - if it wanted.

I *think* the German armed forces (Bundeswehr) were somewhat bigger by number of troops (~640 000 active plus ~1.2 mn reservists) than the US military presence in Europe at that time. Although the US could draw on reinforcements of course.
