Why do followers of religion justify abhorrent acts with the simple caveat that "God" gave us free will? Does that mean that God never cares about victims or THEIR free will?

Just joined, not as a direct result of the election (I left Twitter, shortly àfter Musk took over, as his early comments seemed to suggest a disaster waiting to happen), and looking forward to Bluesky.
