This is what misguided development looks like. A pristine, beautifully maintained historic house on the cusp of demolition. It's not corridor zoned, but will encroach into a very cohesive and functional neighbourhood and destroy one of the few remaining unspoiled Victorian streetscapes. It's called block-busting. This is being done by a developer who flouts the rules. (Doesn't have a demolition permit yet). And allowed by Halifax planning in the name of the housing crisis (or maybe tax greed). Tearing this down and replacing it with "luxury" condos or rentals does nothing for affordable housing. Luxury rentals are going begging. One developer has applied to the municipality to turn 20 apartments in a new build on Barrington St into Air BnB units because they can't rent them. Meanwhile the wholesale destruction of something distinct about Halifax continues.

Nova Scotia Fire/Emergency/Info 48m • S LOCAL STATE OF EMERGENCY • • • West Dalhousie Wildfire Prompts County of Annapolis to Declare State of Local Emergency The Municipality of the County of Annapolis has declared a State of Local Emergency due to the ongoing West Dalhousie wildfires, which remain out of control. "This has become a long-standing incident, and our primary concern remains the wellbeing and safety of our residents," said Warden Diane LeBlanc. "Declaring a state of local emergency allows us to take the necessary steps to protect property and the health, safety, and welfare of the inhabitants of the affected area." A municipal state of local emergency is in effect for a period of seven (7) days unless renewed or terminated sooner. During this time, residents are expected to follow all official instructions and directives from emergency officials. The declaration also prohibits the inflation of prices for essential goods and services, ensuring residents have fair access to what they need during this crisis. The Municipality continues to work closely with provincial partners, fire services, Emergency Management Office, and community organizations to coordinate response efforts. Residents are urged to monitor official updates from Annapolis Regional Emergency Management Organization (REMO) and other official government sources. Call 1-833-806-1515 for public information related to the wildfire and evacuation supports. "Our communities are strong and resilient," said Warden LeBlanc. "We thank everyone for their cooperation and for looking out for one another during this extremely challenging time."

One of the helicopters fighting the Long Lake wildfire has crashed.

The Department of Natural Resources confirms that one of its helicopters crashed in shallow water at about 4:24 p.m. today, August 15, while working on the Long Lake wildfires. The pilot was conscious and talking with firefighters who quickly reached the aircraft. By 6 p.m. he was rescued from his aircraft and taken for medical assessment. Out of respect for the pilot's privacy, the department is not releasing his name. Transport Canada investigates all aircraft incidents and has been informed. The department will cooperate fully.

This evacuation is in place to manage traffic issues and to protect residents and workers in the area. The barricades on Chain Lake Drive will be removed. All access points to the plaza west of Chain Lake Drive from Julius Boulevard to Kent (225 Chain Lake Drive) will be closed. Residents are asked to limit all travel to the Bayers Lake area.

HRM is advising residents that, due to the Fire Proclamation – Travel Ban issued by Nova Scotia Gov today, restrictions will be placed on access to the woods in municipal park spaces, effective 4 p.m. today.
