Saw two Mitchum Marlowe movies today. One is much better than the other. Farewell, My Lovely is a highly evocative and atmospheric adaptation of Chandler's work. The Big Sleep (1978) is somewhat dated, and the modern setting doesn't quite work for that particular adaptation.

It's a little simplistic and morally black and white, but it is undoubtedly one of De Palma's triumphs, both critically and commercially. The set pieces are amazing.
