Snow happened.

First snow of the year on the Iron Ore Heritage Trail, Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The trail is 47 miles long... I don't do the whole thing.

The cityscape has one other large thing: a huge wind turbine called the "Big Egg Beater". This turbine has never generated electricity in its almost twenty years. I keep forgetting it exists. And I don't think there are any refrigerator magnets of it -- nothing kitchen-related about the egg beater.

Visited some family for Labor Day. Nice barbecue with a pleasant, mild rain. And reminisced a bit about Ishpeming, MI.

These two huge buildings are headframes, the tops of mine elevators. The biggest buildings around, and iconic parts of the cityscape. You can get refrigerator magnets of them.

My cat, Marbles. It was misty and wet outside, so she was allowed to spend time on the front porch without a chaperone. She was kind enough to receive a package peacefully.

Went on a walk.
A photograph of the Presque Isle lighthouse, as seen from the shore end of the breakwater. A few people are further ahead. Only a fraction of the path to the lighthouse is this smooth concrete. Most of it involves jumping from one huge boulder to another.

Earlier today I visited Presque Isle Park in Marquette, Michigan. The ore dock lowered a few of its chutes and poured iron ore pellets onto a big cargo ship.

A few chutes on the right have been lowered and iron ore pellets are flowing down from the train cars above. This ore dock is similar to one nearby at (Ellwood A. Mattson) Lower Harbor. The Lower Harbor dock had its elevated train tracks removed, as it's no longer in use. The tracks used to pass through the downtown Marquette area, around the height of its tallest buildings. Celebration banners, such as for Christmas, would hang from the tracks over busy streets.

Why? Why is there snow everywhere? There was grass not too many days ago. Birds and nearly cat-sized squirrels were enjoying themselves.
