Report: Southampton have transfer bid turned down for PSV’s Cody Gakpo
Photo by ANP via Getty Images Gakpo is apparently a key Southampton transfer target Southampton have reportedly had a transfer bid rejected for PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo. The Netherlands international has been linked to a string of Premier League clubs, including Manchester United earlier in the transfer window, Everton, and Leeds United. But according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Southampton have “made the most concrete approach” for Gakpo so far this summer. However, that wasn’t enough for the Eredivisie club to accept. The report says that Gakpo has been identified as a key target for Southampton and negotiations have been led by Rasmus Ankersen, co-founder of Saints’ ownership group Sport Republic. Aged 23, Gakpo scored 12 goals and assisted 13 in PSV’s last Eredivisie campaign and has already started this season strongly with three goals and three assists to his name already. PSV’s failure to qualify for UEFA Champions League football is said to have increased Saints’ chances of signing the forward, who has also hinted that his future is uncertain in Holland. “I can’t say anything about it at the moment,” Gakpo said about where he will play out the rest of the 2022-23 season. “As I said before, the whole picture has to be right. It is a puzzle and in the coming days I will see which puzzle fits best.” Gakpo came through PSV’s youth system and has scored 46 times in 143 games for the Eindhoven club. Saints are in the market for at least one more forward and signing Gakpo would certainly bolster Ralph Hasenhuttl’s attacking options.

Southampton 0-1 Manchester United: Fernandes goal separates two sides
Photo by Mike Hewitt/Getty Images It was a spirited effort in the blazing sun, but not to be today. **Southampton could not overcome Bruno Fernandes’ second-half goal in a 1-0 Premier League loss to Manchester United on Saturday.** Fernandes finished off a smart team goal on 55 minutes that saw the Portuguese international volley in Diogo Dalot’s fizzing cross with a right foot into the bottom corner. With Saints again looking to complete a comeback for a second-straight league match, Joe Aribo forced David de Gea into a point-blank save from a header. Sekou Mara was denied from a sensational overhead kick, but Dalot, who was instrumental in United’s goal, cleared the ball off the line in added time. Southampton thought they should’ve been awarded a penalty in the 60th minute when the ball struck Scott McTominay multiple times whilst in a battle with Che Adams. The full-time whistle, meanwhile, gave United back-to-back wins for the first time since February. * * * **Southampton (4-2-3-1):** Bazunu; Djenepo (Perraud 89), Salisu, Bella-Kotchap, Walker-Peters; Lavia, Ward-Prowse; Elyounoussi (S. However, Saints will be facing a buoyant Manchester United following their commanding 2-1 victory over local rivals Liverpool on Monday night. Romain Perraud could be available for selection after he recovered from a groin issue, giving Ralph Hasenhuttl some more defensive options. Tino Livramento remains a long-term absentee for Southampton as he continues rehab for his knee injury. Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag could give new signing Casemiro, who signed from Real Madrid in the summer transfer window, his first appearance as a Red Devil on Saturday afternoon. The Brazilian has received his work permit, something he couldn’t get in time for that aforementioned Liverpool match. Some bad news for United fans, though. Anthony Martial, one of Monday night’s difference makers, has been ruled out with an Achilles injury. Victor Lindelof also remains unavailable for selection. * * * ## Southampton vs Manchester United pre-match stats **Head-to-head** * Southampton haven’t beaten Manchester United in any of their last 12 Premier League games (D7, L5). * The Saints are two goals away from conceding 100 in the Premier League against United. **Southampton** * Southampton have lost five of their last seven home games in the Premier League (W1, D1). * They have conceded two or more goals in all but one of those seven matches, the exception being a 1-0 victory over Arsenal. * James Ward-Prowse has nine goals and six assists in his last 25 league appearances. * However, the Saints captain is yet to score at St Mary’s in 2022, a run of 11 top-flight games. * Three of Southampton’s five goals scored in the league this season have come from substitutes. **Manchester United** * Manchester United could win back-to-back fixtures in the Premier League for the first time since February. * The Red Devils’ current run of seven straight league defeats away from home is their worst since losing 10 in a row in 1936. * United are trying to avoid defeats in each of their opening two away league games of a season, a sequence they last recorded in 1973. * Marcus Rashford hasn’t scored a Premier League goal away from home when starting a match since doing so against Leicester on Boxing Day in 2020. _Stats via BBC Sport_

Report: Southampton “in talks” with Arsenal for Ainsley Maitland-Niles loan-to-buy deal
Photo by Stuart MacFarlane/Arsenal FC via Getty Images Saints are reportedly in for versatile Arsenal midfielder Maitland-NIles Southampton are looking to bring in Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles before the summer transfer window according to various outlets. Maitland-Niles, who can play in central midfield as well as in defence, has entered the final 12 months of his contract with Arsenal and the Gunners are looking to offload him according to The Daily Mail. Saints are said to want to bring Maitland-Niles in on an initial loan with an option to buy. The 24-year-old, who won the Europa Conference League on loan at AS Roma last season, is also drawing interest from Premier League clubs West Ham United and AFC Bournemouth according to that report. > Southampton are pushing to sign Ainsley Maitland-Niles. Talks now in progress with Arsenal on loan with buy option, as current AFC deal also included an option to extend until 2024. ⚪️ #SaintsFC > > Saints, insisting to beat competition from two more clubs. #AFC pic.twitter.com/iaCYW7XYi4 > > — Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) August 24, 2022 Renowned football journalist Fabrizio Romano also suggests that Southampton are leading the race to sign Maitland-Niles on a loan-to-buy deal. It’s been made evident that Maitland-Niles is no longer a part of Mikel Arteta’s plans at the Emirates and perhaps the prospect of a long-term move and more first-team minutes would suit his situation.

Ralph Hasenhuttl denies Che Adams will be leaving Southampton in transfer window
Photo by Alex Burstow/Getty Images Che Adams will not be leaving Saints according to Ralph Ralph Hasenhuttl has firmly denied that striker Che Adams will be leaving Southampton in the summer transfer window. Adams is on form and without many striking options, Southampton fans had been questioning the line said by Saints CEO Martin Semmens in this month’s fan forum - a quote that insinuated that Adams and any other player could leave if the terms were right. “If somebody leaves the club, we’ll do it for the right reasons,” said Semmens when Adams’ future at the club was raised. “But I wouldn’t get too worried about an agent and Sky Sports and Twitter because most of those things aren’t true, as you probably see, because most of the players we’ve signed you’ve not heard of until we actually do it.” At that time, it looked like Adams would be resigned to starting Southampton games on the bench. In fairness, Adams hadn’t scored a Saints goal since February. After his game-changing substitute appearance for Saints at Leicester City last Saturday, where he scored two second-half goals to secure the win at the King Power Stadium, it appears that the club have changed their mind on Adams’ future. “I can categorically say that he is our player and that he will stay with us, we love him and especially when he scores goals,” said Hasenhuttl when asked about Adams’ future in his latest press conference, per Alfie House of the Daily Echo. “He is our player and we will definitely not sell him this summer. “I am more concentrating on getting him into the position to score goals, his mood in the last weeks has changed completely since he scored, since we changed shape this helps him definitely and I think this is the reason he feels more comfortable in this role.” Adams has been linked to numerous rival Premier League clubs over the summer, including Nottingham Forest and Everton. It appears that Everton are the club that is the most interested at this point in the window. However, if Hasenhuttl’s quote is anything to go by, there is little chance that Adams will be leaving Southampton in 2022.
