If you are not using a fountain pen safe ink, or if you are using unusual paper that may get fibers stuck in the nib, I would clean it more often.

I use fountain pens a lot, although I don't draw with them. JetPens has some great beginner guides! If you're refilling with the same ink, you should be good for a couple of refills but you should give it a good cleaning every so often. www.jetpens.com/blog/How-to-...
