She grabs Riku’s arms and spins out from between them. Slipping her hands into his, she looks up at him seriously, struck with a sudden, wild inspiration. “Dance with me,” she says. Sora would have immediately pulled her close and started galloping off around the room, uncoordinated but somehow still graceful, his enthusiasm and heart making up for any technical lacking. Riku blinks at her from arms length, caught off guard. “What?” He’s stalling, trying to buy time for his brain to catch up, but Kairi doesn’t want him to think his way out of this. She reels him in and wraps her arms around his waist, settling her cheek against his chest. “Dance with me,” she says again. It takes a minute, but he finally puts his arms back around her too. “...This is just a hug,” he says after fifteen seconds of dead silence. Kairi laughs. “Then start moving, dummy. Then it’ll be a dance.” Riku mumbles something, and Kairi pulls back a little to stare at him. He averts his eyes but says, a little louder, “I don’t know how to dance.” Kairi stares harder until he continues, “I skipped a year of school, remember? My mom was gonna make me take a dance class that year, but I—” “Was too busy saving the world,” Kairi finishes for him so he can’t tag on something self-deprecating. “…Right.” “Soul’s where your deep memories are kept, things you don’t have to think about. Sense memory. It’s why you could use that mortar and pestle: you’ve done it before, and done it enough that it’s sunk into your soul. Ain’t nothing that can take those memories from you; you just might not know they’re there until something happens and it comes up.” Rinalle chews on his lip. His gaze drifts past Frost to the mountainscape behind her, bright sandy hues in the mid-morning sun. M’halku tweaks his ear gently: he’s not as patient as Frost. “What’s eatin’ you, kit?” “It frightens me,” Rinalle says. He speaks plainly, without guilt or shame for feeling how he does, no worry that M’halku will take it as a personal attack. Blunt honesty is just how things work with the Bastards. “That memories are just…” he wiggles his fingers demonstratively, “lurking to surprise me, wrest control of myself away from me. What if I—” “You won’t.” Rinalle scowls. “How do you know? How can you be sure there’s nothing stuck inside here that won’t make me someone else?” M’halku shrugs. “I know who you are.” Rinalle throws up his hands in frustration, and M’halku laughs, folding his arms across his chest. “You know who you are, too. Nothing that’s behind you can change that if you don’t want it to. Might come a day when you remember something of who you were that contradicts who you’ve become, and that’s the day you’ve got a choice to make. You’re the one gets to decide who you are.” Kalais’s goal with all of this had simply been to pull the Viper into a situation where it would be easier to get him to confess the painfully obvious feelings he has for Tarquin, but with the two of them apparently beating him to it, he’s content to reap the benefits. He kisses Ashur back, palming the back of his head and squeezing. Might not be any hair to pull, but he’ll make do. He’s not about to roll over just because Tarquin’s ganging up on him. Ashur kisses up Kalais’s cheek, murmurs, “May I?”, and encloses the tip of Kalais’s long ear in the wet heat of his mouth. The noise Kalais makes is utterly embarrassing, and he turns his head, allowing easier access to his ear in answer. This puts the couch firmly in his field of vision as his eyes flutter open and closed, Ashur’s lips and teeth moving along the surface of his ear in what feels like an experiment to find what will turn Kalais so boneless he loses his grip on Ashur’s waist. Tarquin has seated himself on the couch, pants discarded, his fingers slowly playing with his cock, dragging the hood back and forth along the shaft. Kalais’s mouth goes dry and he squirms, but Ashur has him well pinned to the wall and all he can do is watch as Tarquin smirks at him. “Fuck,” he says, the word turning into a moan as Ashur bites at his ear. “Please, I wanna—” “You’re going to stay right where you are,” Tarquin says, “and take whatever Ashur wants to give you for as long as he feels like it. Then he can come suck my prick.” He looks past her, counting the half-crumbled bricks of one of the buildings so he doesn’t open his mouth and admit all that. Besides, she doesn’t care about his sob story: she’s got her own and it’s so much more important. “Like you said,” he grits through his teeth. “You can’t save everyone. Besides, that was before my time. Did you want an apology?” Not that it would do either of them any good. Empty, useless words. He’s beginning to think coming here was a mistake. Rook starts mumbling to herself, and Kalais might not know which one it is but he knows a spell when he hears it. “Shit.” He pulls a throwing knife into his left hand, his right hand fingering nervously at his necklace, hoping it’ll protect him from whatever the hell she’s doing. “Shit.” She has a sword. A huge fucking magic sword! He flings the knife almost before he’s aware of making the decision. Kalais lives on knives’ edges: the moment just before you’re attacked is the best time to strike. He can’t know if Rook was about to swing at him, but he’d been conditioned to never take the chance. You strike first, you strike hard, you live to walk away. A bolt of lightning catches him in the chest and he stumbles backward, but the wards in his necklace function, dissipating most of the energy so that the resulting shock is just enough to make him swear and shake his arms out, glad he’d only drawn the one knife before that. He grabs two more now, twirling them around his fingers. He’s going to pop his head around that corner and stick her like a fucking pincushion—

“Aren’t you the Warrior of Light?” Rinalle looks up from his contribution to the dinner preparations, M’naago having roped him in earlier, well aware from their childhood of what his hands can and cannot do to be useful for the collective. The Resistance soldier in front of him forges on: “A male Miqo’te with red-gold hair! That’s you, isn’t it?” One of his ears flicks as he hears his cousin snickering from somewhere nearby, and he starts contemplating what form of retribution to enact on Naago later as he gazes steadily at the Resistance man. “I don’t know if you’ve noticed,” he says casually, letting his natural accent burr his words, “but we’re in Ala Mhigo: there’s more than a few of us red-haired Miqo’te runnin’ around, so you’re going to have to do better than that if you want to go around making accusations.”
