Democracy is not the opposite of authoritarianism, contrary to what we seem to be learning in school. We chant "democracy” as if it is grounded in principle, but how many of us persuade our fellow citizens versus assemble majorities to beat them into submission?

As an academic exercise, creating categories can help us understand people better. But in doing so, we risk losing sight of the unique individuals behind those labels. The boxes we place others in often end up dividing us, rather than fostering spaces where everyone can truly belong.

I find modern-day comparisons to the actual civil-rights eras lacking. Jackie Robinson and Branch Rickey were pioneers. They risked a lot to be first. Now, we holler "civil rights!" every time we aren't treated exactly perfectly the way we think we deserve every moment.
