"Let me look at your file... Orphan... Womaniser... Drink problem... I think I have just the identity for you. 007, James Bond. Can you live with that? Some of your predecessors managed to retire gracefully. Try not to emulate the last one. Nanobots and missiles. Ouch."

Easy. James Bond is a manufactured identity given to all male agents assigned the 007 role. There have been many of them.

Or. Hard reboot: this is the first and only Bond.

Or. Who the hell wants this show anyway?

Point Pleasant (2005). It's The OC but starring the daughter of Satan! Will she choose good or evil as rival forces battle over her soul? It's kinda slow... Wait: they just got cancelled so fuck it, it's time for the apocalypse and all those annoying entitled rich teens are gonna die! Great fun :)

I saw that title and thought "Ah, that must be what they called Mannequin in China."

Can't the rest of us just pay for them all to leave now? Sure, it would tear many families apart. But they're fine with that.

And not just for the very good reasons you state.

Star Wars has always been about destiny and agency, but TROS used these themes as gotchas. There's no interest or tension when a character has a destiny but nobody knows what it is.

These films made me angry too, and we all know what that leads to!

The prequels vexed me because I knew they were for kids and not me, but I also knew that a couple of different choices in each would have greatly elevated them.

The sequel trilogy felt like bad fanfic, but bad in a different way for each film. But the last of them was by far the most egregious.

Oh do make sure they get maimed during character generation!

I don't care how far back we need to go. Romans, Vikings, I'll take anything as evidence of impurity.

Can somebody not sift through her family tree until a foreigner is found? Then we can ship her off to another country like the second class citizen she is.

Even those of us living in countries with actual kings don't want them to act like kings. If they do, we'll take their bicycles.

Indeed! "Ma, why do the toasters hate us?"

"Because sad fuckwits raped them, and now we all have to die."

When the fembots rise up, it will be the end of all of us.

Turns out it's easier to be nice to one another when you're not fighting over scraps.

It's not a long road back to credibility. It's a private track where they just drive round in an endless circle of irrelevant self-indulgence.

Sure. Replace it with a Land Value Tax. That's the answer you wanted, no? Surely you can't mean disemboweling public services...

Also, Peter Weir is great. Picnic at Hanging Rock, anyone?

You are so right about Master and Commander. "At sea" films are very risky to pull off. But this came along just before CGI became the default choice, as per Pirates of the Carribbean. And so we get to enjoy some great practical effects and some really big water tank work.

I watched Kingdom of Heaven for the first time a few weeks ago and was not only pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it, but also by the presence of an intermission and even a black screen overture. Ok, the score wasn't great, but I appreciated it nonetheless.

What's ultimately sovereign is who the military decides they report to: the monarch as per their oaths, the government as per their payslips, or themselves as per a coup. Similarly for the police - their purse strings are held by government, not the judiciary or legislature.

Closer did nothing for me. Croupier I haven't seen, so shall check out. Children of Men I very much enjoyed, but I feel it was a good film that happened to star Clive Owen, and that he didn't really bring much to it.
