That being said, not every villain needs a tragic backstory that makes the viewer sympathise with them. Someone that’s just evil for the sake of evil can be compelling in their own right, and one we don’t see as much any more in modern media.

I’ve never thought about it but I would say Fallen Hero. I love a good tragedy, and one self contained within a character arc is even better, especially when you can speculate if they would have fallen if XYZ happened differently. Redemption arcs are also fun, but love the bastards beyond saving.
