I really like it when the players' wit and tactics determine the outcome moreso than the strength of the abilities handed to them from the rulebook.

The barbarian tanking a volley of arrows feels epic in some contexts, but often times feels tedious and undervalues the adversaries.

I'm a big fan of dungeon crawls and big tactical combat set pieces, often with vehicles or vessels involved. Sometimes D&D works great...other times it can feel like a slog during big combats. I often wish the PCs weren't so super-humanly powerful so there was a bit more realism to the storytelling.
