I looked it up. It took about two years for doodle jump to come out. I think that was the first cultural impact moment of the iPhone outside the hype of it being a cool device.
So two years sounds about right. not looking so good for midjourney, but looking good for Suno

just for clarity since i think im coming off a little hype-y. besides being pro accessibility im not particularly pro any of these specific companies or tools outside some coding tools. i’m just very very very curious about this wild shift we are undergoing and paying a lot of attention

i also wonder how hard it will be to see new culture going forward- e.g. italian brain rot, which in a different age would have been all of twitter. or maybe im just old now

i’m curious what the next few years will be like. i think we’re only in the last few months starting to see any tools that are masterable (that make any reasonable room for human creativity)

thinking back it seems like other technologies were a mix. the internet created some wild culture fast, but twitter floundered for a while. the iphone was sort of fast but actually it was just a hyped thing for quite a few years before it really had “impact” but the ipod was instant.

i feel the opposite but not for any high minded reasons. i think culture will use whatever tools are at its disposal to make culture, but it takes a while to warm up a new one. either gen ai will become a tool that people find useful or it won’t, but im not surprised it hasn’t yet.

(I think gf bots are totally having a (bad) cultural impact), but aside from that I'm curious about where you're choosing to draw the lines and why. Thinking about like, Photoshop, I think it basically did the same thing, and the straight filters (no human input) sucked, but it still had huge impact

I think www.youtube.com/c/thereiruin... maybe qualifies as significant cultural impact by the numbers but im not sure where your bar is. AI girlfriends are having a significant cultural impact too but not in the way one wants.

one of the classic japanese game hobbiests, Kenta Cho recently tied together 111 of his single-button games into an old-school wario-ware you can play on your phone (he's been making tiny free games since the 80s)

thanks man. that is really good to hear! we went through a lot of prototypes around this! it turns out it’s hard to thread the needle of providing both a tutorial series and a great mini for expert players
