Today's challenge was to try and photograph Tufted Coquette. Of all the world's birds, only Cuba's Bee Hummingbird is smaller. To add to the degree of difficulty, they're absolute dynamos that never keep still. Anyway.... 6 hours later...

An evening boat trip at Caroni Swamp added a few dashes of colour to the trip....

Visited the wonderful Yerette gardens in Trinidad today. Lots of Hummers present (I saw 13 species including 7 new) and, as always, fun times trying to photographthem, in flight...

So on Trinidad mow and my quest for new Hummers starts again tomorrow... Meanwhile, here's my other two new ones from Tobago. Male and Female Black-throated Mango and Rufous-breasted Hermit.

Moving onto Trinidad today in search of more Hummingbirds. In the meantime, some other stuff from Tobago....

Visited a garden today renowned for attracting White-tailed Saberwings, in an effort to upgrade my pics to include flight shots...

Today's offering is Copper-rumped, which was my first new hummer of the trip. Suffers a lot from bullying, especially from the very aggressive Ruby Topaz, so it doesn't hang around long... making it a tricky one to photograph.
February 22, 2025 at 8:54 PM
Ruby Topaz must win for appearance changing amongst birds. A dull dark-chocolate with a chestnut tail 99% of the time, that transforms into one of the most beautiful birds ever, at the flick of a switch. It's brief and hard to capture, as if hummer pics aren't hard enough! My efforts...

White-tailed Saberwing. A vulnerable species with a restricted range of high altitude forests in Tobago and a small population in Venezuela. Not enough light in the forest to attempt flight shots but high ISO capability of the R3 allowed at least for some perched. Cracking bird!
February 20, 2025 at 8:12 PM
First day on Tobago spent recovering from travel, though duding around the hotel grounds added Copper-rumped to my hummingbird list. Sadly, not photographed but hopefully will sort that tomorrow - a full day in the forest including a 'hummingbird garden'. Lots of these two locally... Very tropical!
